Description of Activities
Several years ago, a group of parents at an elementary school refused to permit their students to enter their elementary school because of asbestos problems. They, and the faculty, insisted on hearing from a qualified person sent by the Fund. This started meetings with faculty and parents directed by a highly respected environmental firm under the auspices of the Fund. Evaluations of asbestos and other potential dangers are performed in addition to overseeing corrective measures taken.
The Fund responds to faculty and parental concerns in addressing the health, safety, and environmental conditions of the schools occupants on a variety of issues.
If problems arise, have your Building Representative call the PFT Health & Welfare Fund office. We address problems such as:
- exposures to lead
- asbestos
- bacteria and fungus
- dust
- fumes
- odors and vapors associated with construction activities
- areas with high incidences of cancer
- the impact of toxins on very young children and pregnant teachers
- lead paint and lead in drinking water
