Educational Issues Department

Building on Past Successes

Under the auspices of the PFT Health & Welfare Fund, a new section, the PFT Educational Issues Department, has been formalized as part of the PFT family of services.

In the past, the Health & Welfare Fund has taken the lead in educational activities. The H&W Fund has, for years, sponsored the highly successful Annual Education Conference:  Programs for Teaching.

We have conducted seminars for new teachers on classroom management, reading management programs, and other professional initiatives to benefit our members and our students.

Expanding on past success, the Educational Issues Department has as its goal the implementation of various proven, research-based programs whose aim it is is to help teachers better teach our students.

The Educational Issues Department is working to introduce, present, and train teachers in these research based programs.

This new department begins with a small but experienced and dedicated staff and is led by Jack Steinberg, Chair of the H&W Fund and also the PFT's Director of Educational Affairs. Ros Johnson serves as Coordinator for the PFT Health and Welfare Educational Issues Department.

The Department has already played the lead role in programs including Reading Recovery, the introduction of new mathematics programs and other professional growth initiatives.

The Fund is honoring a prior IRS letter which authorizes the initiation of programs to train members on how to better educate each other, and how to better educate our students. The Fund recognizes that your physical health, your mental health, and your career health are inter-related.

Trained speakers are available to address the faculty of any school on Health & Welfare, Retirement, and Educational Issues Department matters. Please contact your Building Representative to schedule a speaker.
